Fifth Day of ELCA Churchwide Assembly 2025
We started out a little more tired today. There was a temptation to be short as an answer to unintentional discourtesy by other weary pilgrims as we walked the length of the convention center to the assigned table of our plenary. A gift of donuts greeted us from the family of our synod. The warmth and grace of community nourished our soul. We found ourselves refreshed by love.
Seven highly qualified candidates took the podium as we prepared for the election of the secretary. God used the body of the assembly to call the gifts of The Rev. Lucille “CeCee” Mills to the office. Today was her departed mother’s birthday. We celebrated with her in memory of her mother and her call. Passionate debate and statements were made on amendments and resolutions that would make up the rest of the morning and afternoon. Song, meditation, and prayer would guide us in our discernment.
From El Salvador and Namibia, we were joined by Bishops Gregorio Rosa Chávez and Hilja Nghaangulwa for lunch. We shared what it means to be a sibling synod and shared stories of how experiences with sibling synods have been meaningful in our walk. We discussed possible ways we could engage in the future. We learned that as much as we love hosting guests from other countries, during this time in US history, it is easier for us to go to them. Plans were shared about a trip the Sierra Pacific Synod is moving forward with in November to El Salvador.
Throughout the week, I have joined and been joined by other voting members in meals, elevators, tables, and worship. We have exchanged names, hometowns, and ministries. The banquet in honor of Bishop Elizabeth Eaton and Secretary Sue Rothmeyer was no exception. Three of our party found ourselves sitting and dining with the Virginia Synod of the ELCA as we toasted the retirements of our beloved leaders. I found myself alone but not lonely as I headed to bed with a head full of new knowledge and half-formulated plans basking in the warmth of belonging.
