Court Blocks Unlawful Immigration Raids at Houses of Worship

We are glad to be part of the five ELCA synods that received preliminary injunctive relief for sensitive locations.

A judge granted a preliminary injunction blocking ICE from conducting enforcement operations at or around places of worship. This ruling upholds fundamental religious freedoms under the U.S. Constitution and protects us and our loved ones. Several congregations in our synod courageously told their stories so we could serve as a plaintiff in this lawsuit alongside a coalition of ecumenical partners.

We especially celebrate the congregations with migrant members, who have long embodied radical hospitality, opened their doors in faith, and trusted God’s call to welcome the stranger. Their courage, witness, and ministry of accompaniment helped make this moment possible.

“As people of faith, our sacred spaces must remain places of safety, refuge, and worship. For decades, our congregations have opened their doors to all, regardless of immigration status, and carried out ministries grounded in dignity, compassion, and community. Today’s ruling affirms a simple but profound principle: religious freedom belongs to everyone. We are grateful the court recognized that truth and protected the rights of our communities.”
