For
many years my wife, Karen, and I struggled with our financial
stewardship. We
admired people who faithfully gave a tithe - or more - of
their income, but we didn't feel that we could do that. We were raising
children, trying to get a business established, paying off
school loans, replacing the brakes on the car, etc., etc. We wanted to be good stewards, but our
resources were scarce, or so we though
I
wish we had known these words of Corrie Ten Boom at that
time: "Never be
afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God." The day came, though,
when we decided to step out in faith and become tithers. It was scary, but more
and more we came to understand that we were stewards of
abundance, not scarcity, and that God would sustain us.
What
a joy this journey became for us! Did we still struggle
financially at times?
Of course.
But our commitment to first fruits, proportional giving
to God's work actually freed us from a lot of the worry and
concern that we had experienced. God gave us enough,
and sometimes more than enough, to carry us through.
A
church we visited recently has this as one of its guiding
principles:
"Giving is what Christians do." That is so true when
it comes to our time, groceries for the food pantry, plates of
cookies for a reception, donations to World Hunger or disaster
relief - but not always with our financial stewardship.
In
a few days we will accompany Jesus again through his death and
resurrection. In
his death he gave all he had so that we might live. In his resurrection
God gave his life back - and more - so that we might be
assured of God's loving care, no matter what.
Easter
is a time when we celebrate the abundance of God's love,
amidst the riotous abundance of spring growth and
renewal. May this
also be a time when we commit, or recommit, to sharing the
abundance of our wealth.
Giving is what Christians do!
In
God's abundant peace,
Pr.

BOARD OF PENSIONS HEALTH ASSESSMENT
UPDATE
So far 61 health plan members in the Sierra Pacific Synod
have taken the 2010 Health Assessment, just 24.3% of those
eligible. If 103 more plan members (including spouses)
take the assessment by April 30th, their
congregation or employer will receive a 2%
discount on health insurance premiums this year,
retroactive to January 1st. In
addition, each member who takes the assessment will receive at
least $150 in personal wellness credits.
It's easy!
- Go to Health
Assessment
- Register (you'll need your health ID card)
- Take the survey - only a few minutes
- If you have test results for the requested items, use
them; if not, just estimate (be honest)
- You must take the assessment this year to qualify, even
if you have taken it in prior years.
In these economic times, our congregations and
institutions can use some financial help. $150 toward
one's own health expenses ain't bad, either . . .
Please take the Health Assessment

Synod
Assembly Registration Fees *IMPORTANT* Please note that your congregation is obligated
to register and pay for the same number of voting
members which was listed in the registration letter you
received from the Synod office. If you are entitled to
three voting members (one pastor, one female voting member and
one male voting member), you must pay the registration fee for
all three voting members, even if you are not sending your
full complement of voting members.
If you
are not sending the full number of voting members which has
been allotted to your congregation, register on line those who
are coming. Then send a check to the Synod office for
the amount owed for the voting member(s) who will not be
attending from your congregation.
This is
very impor-tant, since the costs for the Assembly are
"balanced" among the total number of voting members who are
expected to attend. Thank you.
