Sierra Pacific Synod, ELCA                                                                   March 18, 2010

Did you know that March is Women's History Month?  The reason I know that is because I had the opportunity to attend a truly wonderful event at PLTS this last week called "Honoring Our Foremothers".  (For the sake of transparency, I will tell you that I was on the planning committee for this event.  For the sake of full disclosure, I will tell you I only made it to one meeting, so I can take no credit for how good it was.

The purpose of the event was to honor the women who play a major role in bringing about the eventual ful inclusion of women in the life of the church.  Their stories were good and funny and sad and inspiring.

As I sat with my own memories of seminary and ministry, I was overwhelmed by the recognition of all who had gone before me, particularly the women:  women who shared their faith and spoke their minds and stood for justice and equality.  Women who encouraged and prodded me to listen to the Holy Spirit as she whispered/shouted/ guided me.  Where would I be today without them?

I raise this question because we all "stand on the shoulders" of those who have gone before us.  We all have women (and men!) who have shared the Good News of Jesus Christ in word and deed.  We all have people who have been the church in order that we might do the same.  As you move into these last days of Lent and move with Jesus toward the cross, I invite you to remember those who brought you here ... those people who shared their faith in order that you might have yours.  I invite you to remember those women and men, those pastors, Sunday School teachers, neighbors, and strangers who invited you in.  And then consider who needs to hear that same invitation from you.

God's peace,

The Rev. Nancy Feniuk Nelson
Bishop's Associate

Synod Assembly Registration Fees *IMPORTANT*

Please note that your congregation is obligated to register and pay for the same number of voting members which was listed in the registration letter you received from the Synod office.  If you are entitled to three voting members (one pastor, one female voting member and one male voting member), you must pay the registration fee for all three voting members, even if you are not sending your full complement of voting members.

If you are not sending the full number of voting members which has been allotted to your congregation, register on line those who are coming.  Then send a check to the Synod office for the amount owed for the voting member(s) who will not be attending from your congregation.

This is very impor-tant, since the costs for the Assembly are "balanced" among the total number of voting members who are expected to attend.  Thank you.
