ELCA
CAMPUS MINISTRY IS A LUTHERAN MINISTRY ON CAMPUS, NOT JUST A
MINISTRY TO LUTHERANS
Campus ministry provides an ELCA
presence at more than 180 state and private colleges and
universities, with cooperating congregations in campus
ministry at an additional 400 campuses nationwide. In
the Sierra Pacific Synod we support campus ministries in
Berkeley, Davis, Sacramento, Fresno, Stanford, Monterey Bay,
Santa Cruz, and Sonoma.
Campus
Ministry is both faithful to a rich theological tradition and
driven by the challenges of the contemporary
university. Drawing on the Scriptures and the Lutheran
Confessions, Campus Ministry bears witness to God's amazing
grace within the context of higher education. Sensitive
to the pastoral needs of those on campus and engaged in the
intellectual discourse of the university, Campus Ministry
strives to communicate the Gospel in fresh ways.
Through worship, study, fellowship, and service,
members of the academic community taste the fullness of God's
grace. As expansive as Christ's love, Campus Ministry
reaches out to all who teach and learn, inviting them to
experience the challenge of following Jesus on the
Way.

SYNOD ASSEMBLY
COSTS
Most people go to meetings without thinking much about
the costs. The reality is that regardless of venue the
costs are substantial, including rental of meeting and display
space, tables and chairs, tablecloths, staging equipment,
power, air conditioning and heating, lighting, and the cost of
labor to set up meeting rooms and to change those sets as the
agenda requires. Fortunately, we are able to offset
those costs by committing to use about the same number of
sleeping rooms we used the last time we met in that
city. We negotiate the best rates possible during the
value season of the year. Without these revenues for the
hotel, we would be paying directly for these goods and
services, which would increase assembly registration fees
substantially.
Some of our attendees believe they can save a few dollars
by staying at other hotels a mile or two away from the
assembly property. By doing so, they don't help offset
the above expenses. If we don't meet our contracted
sleeping room commitment, it increases the synod's exposure to
financial penalties.
Staying at the assembly hotel has its
advantages. If you want to take a break or change
clothes, you're just a few steps from your room. The
Silver Legacy will also provide at registration coupons that
will give hotel guests discounts on food, cocktails and gift
shop purchases.
We encourage you to make your reservations on the
attached link to the Silver Legacy Resort as soon as
possible.

THRIVENT FINANCIAL LAUNCHES 'FAN IT FORWARD'
CAMPAIGN
Want to make a difference without lifting a finger (well,
maybe just one)? Thrivent for Lutherans has launched a
new charitable outreach campaign on Facebook allowing new fans
an easy way to help others worldwide.
Now through March 31, 2010, for every new fan of its
Facebook page, Thrivent Financial will contribute $1 to
Lutheran World Relief (LWR), up to $10,000. The goal
of "Fan It Forward" is to support LWR and raise awareness
for the humanitarian outreach the organization is making in
countries around the world. Individuals can participate
in the campaign by going to Thrivent.com/facebook and clicking on the
"Become a Fan" button. A new tab on the Thrivent
Financial Facebook page highlights the campaign details and
gives fans quick tools to spread the word through Facebook,
Twitter and e-mail.
So how will those participating in the "Fan It Forward"
campaign be able to make a difference? Consider
that:
- 25 fans ($25) will help start a crab-raising business
for a woman in Southeast Asia.
- 100 fans ($100) will provide a family a hearty goat that
gives milk that nourishes and sell.
- 375 fans ($375) will give a family a dairy cow that can
produce more than six gallons of milk a day.
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans introduced its Facebook
page in the spring of 2009 with the goal of creating a vibrant
online community. Fans of the site have already played a
key role in other charitable activities, such as helping raise
over $3 million for Haiti relief efforts.
