Christmas/Epiphany Star
Sierra Pacific Synod, ELCA                                                             February 19, 2009

We are very pleased to announce the people who will be serving on the Transition Team for the Sierra Pacific Synod.  All of the applicants were clearly gifted people who were moved to volunteer for a big job.  Keeping the groups a manageable size, balancing the various "skill sets", availability for our kick-off on February 28th and keeping a good mix of lay/clergy and male/female all came into play as groups were formed.  We thank you all for your time and attention to this process and look forward to making progress reports regularly.

SYNOD ASSEMBLY INFORMATION

Registration materials for the upcoming Synod Assembly will be coming out in March.  The Assembly is at the end of May, so this should give plenty of time to register.

Meanwhile, please be sure that your congregation's Parochial Report has been submitted, so that we have an accurate basis on which to determine the number of voting delegates for your congregation.

All leaders under call will have the opportunity to have their picture taken for a new Synod pictorial directory.  We strongly encourage your participation.

1) Teaching ESL in China

Who:  Adults and mature college students (you don't need to be a certified teacher)
What:  Teaching oral English to Chinese English teachers
When:  July 5 - August 3, 2009
Where:  Xinyang City and surrounding countryside, Henan Province
How:  Via China Service Ventures and the Education Department of Xinyang City

2) Youth Service Project in Henan Province

Every year CSV brings Lutheran Youth Groups to China to serve the people of rural Henan Province.  We do this through the painting of schools not able to afford it.  Other projects include cleaning nursing homes, repairing roads, and city beautification.

Join us as we bring American youth and Chinese youth together to serve the poor of Henan Province.  Youth will learn about the rich Lutheran Church mission history in China and what the Chinese Church is doing today.

Dates for the 2009 Youth Service Project are July 15-30, 2009.  Estimated cost is $800, not including airfare.

For information and a teaching application, contact Rev. Steven Ray, Developer, DXV Relation at 253-851-7643 or 877-408-7056, or e-mail at Steven Ray.
