When the disciples found Jesus,

they said to him, 'Everyone is

searching for you.' (Mark 1.37)

This line was in the gospel lesson from February 5th, and when I read it I wondered, are they still?  Is 'everyone' still searching for Jesus?  It brought to mind a one panel cartoon - two men are at a woman's front door asking "have you found Jesus?"  As you scan the living room, behind the curtain is the shape of an adult body with two sandaled feet peeking out from underneath.  As Lutheran Christians we are clear that we do not need to search for Jesus - Jesus is fully present in our lives, every day.  But we don't always recognize the shape of the holy in our lives or in the world, and so we search.

Don't we all know people who are searching for something?  Perhaps they will not say that they are searching for Jesus - they often use other words.  Maybe they express a desire to connect to other people, or to be part to something bigger than themselves.  It could be a hope to share their gifts with the world, maybe to find a place to serve those in need.  Perhaps they are looking for a sense of meaning for their lives, or a search for hope.

Many of those things sound familiar - they are all things that we experienced (or 'found') because of our relationship with God, through Christ.  We have the experience, the relationship, but how do we share it with those who are searching? How do we say to someone who is searching - "come and see!"  How do we help our congregations, our synod, be a place where people can enter into a relationship with God, triune and holy, and find something that they have been searching for?  One important way is for many different voices to be part of the conversation - for people of many ages, ethnicities, cultures, vocations, passions to come together and share their stories of what it means to be one who has been claimed and named by God.  You are a vital part of this conversation, how will you be heard?
