Positions Available:

Office of the Bishop - Sierra Pacific Synod

(Deadline to submit application: Fri. June 24th!)

Following actions of our recent Synod Assembly which reflect decisions made by previous assemblies and the synod council over the past three years to utilize a deployed staff model to serve our synod's ministry, and in keeping with the vision of the Office of the Bishop for the ministry and witness of the Sierra Pacific Synod, qualified rostered leaders are invited to apply for the following two positions:

  • Assistant to the Bishop, Sacramento Office.  Please click here for a position description, and on the following link for an application.
  • Assistant to the Bishop, Bay Area Office.  Please click here for a position description, and on the following link for an application.

It is our hope to call individuals who will help fulfill a shared vision for supporting the congregations of our synod as "centers for mission."   We value a diverse and collaborative work environment and are seeking individuals with strong communication and adaptive learning skills who also model a commitment to spiritual disciplines and faithful stewardship.

Please keep this process in your prayers as we journey forward in our commitment to serve the congregations of the Sierra Pacific Synod.

Dear Juli ,

It has already been one month since we gathered for the 24th Assembly of the Sierra Pacific Synod in Burlingame under the theme, "Lord, when did we?"  I have good memories of the presentations we heard from Dr. Carol Jacobson, Bishop Medardo Gomez, Dr. Mark Allan Powell and Pr. Ruben Duran.  I am grateful for the spirit in which we gathered to consider the work of being synod - budgets and resolutions and reports and hearings and motions.  Most importantly, it was good to be together to worship, to pray, to hear the Word and receive the Sacrament of the Altar -- to be blessed and encouraged and challenged in our calling to be the presence of Christ in the world today.  Thank you to all those who contributed to helping this Assembly be the positive, faith building experience we have heard from many that it was for them.

That's not to say that everything that happened at the Assembly was what people had hoped for.  I know from listening to the discussion and debate on the budget for 2012-13, that there were mixed feelings about the actions we took, especially with regard to moving forward in our mission through the utilization of funds from our cash reserves.  Other people were disappointed that we did not have the opportunity to vote on all of the resolutions that were submitted.  And some were disappointed with the outcome of the votes on the resolutions we did consider.

My hope and prayer, as I offered in my sermon during our opening worship service at our Assembly, was that we would be known as much for what we decided during our gathering as we would be known for how we did this work together - by our care and regard for all voices, by our ability to listen respectfully and carefully to those with whom we disagree, by our ability and willingness to see Christ in one another.  I believe we did that, and I believe this work continues still.  The Synod Council, Council of Deans and the Synod's Discipling Teams will be among the many resources that are drawn upon to continue these conversations and the implementation of the vision for mission represented in the budget that was approved.

As you may have seen on the synod's website and our e-newsletter, we have posted two positions for Assistants to the Bishop; one each in the Burlingame and Sacramento Offices of the Bishop.  We have done so in confidence that by passing the 2012-13 budget, we can reasonably ask people to consider leaving their present calls to accept a call that will last at least until the completion of my current term of service as bishop.  As we move forward in this call process, we know there is much work to be done to build capacity for the work of our synod's ministry through proportionate share giving and other means of ongoing mission support.  These soon to be called staff persons will only add to the process of strengthening the relationships and work we have been called to do.

Conversations have already begun with a number of rostered leaders in our synod and will continue through the rest of this year with congregations and leaders throughout the synod.  The work that synod staff members have already done to strengthen ties between the Office of the Bishop and the congregations and ministries of our synod has begun to bear "good fruit."  It is our intent to build on these relationships and to learn more about how we can support each other in our shared ministry's call to answer the question, "Lord, when did we see you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink?  And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing?  And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?"

We will "keep you posted" on the progress of the call process for the Assistant to the Bishop positions, and especially invite your prayers for this process, for the persons who will make application, and for those two persons who will receive the call to work and walk with us in ministry.

God's Peace,

Bp. Mark
