The Rev. David G. Mullen was elected the third bishop of the Sierra Pacific Synod on April 27, 2002. He has recently announced that he will not seek election to a second term. The Synod will meet in Assembly April 25-27, 2008 and an election for bishop will be on the agenda.

Bishop Mullen previously served as pastor in congregations in North Dakota and California . He and his wife Sue, continue to reside in Antelope outside Sacramento. They have three children and as of this year, two grandchildren. Our bishop is an amateur astronomer and enjoys long walks.

As the bishop of this synod, he presides over official meetings such as the annual Synod Assembly, visits and consults with congregations and clergy groups. He and his staff also work with the Discipling Teams and other lay leaders. The bishop has oversight responsibilities for the clergy and the rostered lay professionals of this synod.

Bishop Mullen has a passion for what he calls the heart work of the church. In a report to the Synod Counci, our bishop offered these remarks about his ministry as a bishop:

John the Baptist: “A voice crying in the wilderness, let your lives
be turned around! For the reign of God is at hand.”

.Bishop Mullen has lifted up five priorities:

1. Pray first
2. Lead by Example
3. Plan for mission
4. Build up the Body
5. Seek and Speak the Truth in Love

Our unifying "theme" for the mission of the Sierra Pacific Synod and the Office of the Bishop is

“Building Healthy, Multiplying Congregations”
