HIGHLIGHTS
SYNOD COUNCIL ACTIONS
June 16, 2001
In a brief meeting following the close of the Synod Assembly in Reno, Council took the following actions:
reflected on the Assembly with generally very positive comments;
set the next Assembly for April 25, 26 & 27, 2002 in Fresno, California;
elected Pastor Kemp Segerhammar, Ms. Evelyn Thomas, and Mr. Bruce Lohse to serve with Bishop Robert Mattheis, Vice President Margie Back, Secretary Linda Headrick, and Treasurer David Sanders as the members of the Executive Committee of the Synod for the next year;
learned of the Northern Mountain Conference’s creative plan to hold a multi-site conference assembly on October 7th (with the bishop’s address to be delivered to all six locations by video);
received a financial report from Treasurer Mai which showed a $78,000 shortage in mission support from congregations for Feb. 1 through May 31, 2001 (compared to the 2001 Budget adopted by the 2000 Assembly);
shared responses received by Council members who called congregational leaders to requestStatement of Intent reports (many responses included mention of oversight or fiscal year differences; some referred to financial strains);
forgave a loan made several years ago to the congregation of St. John, Antioch, CA, but encouraged the congregation to make above and beyond contributions to the Synod Outreach Fund to support mission throughout the synod;
forwarded Assembly Resolutions 01-02 and 01-03 to the Church Council and Executive Committee of the ELCA as directed by the Assembly; and,
appointed Pastor Lucy Kolin (Resurrection, Oakland, CA and Council) to the Word and Sacrament Discipling Team, and Mr. Kent Madsen (Light of Life, Scotts Valley, CA and Council) and Pastor AmyJo Mattheis (Zion, Stockton, CA) to the Witness and Service Discipling Team.
The next meeting of the Synod Council will be on September 21 & 22, 2001 in Fresno at the Radisson Hotel and Convention Center, site of next year’s Assembly. Visitors are welcome!
