Synod Council Meeting

At its pre-Assembly meeting in Fresno on April 24th, the Council of the Sierra Pacific Synod took the following actions:

Proposals to the Assembly: A plan was fashioned for the interaction of the Assembly with candidates for bishop during the Assembly, and a proposed Assembly agenda incorporating the plan was approved. Motions to propose the granting of voice privileges and endorsing the resolution to name the Rev. Robert W. Mattheis as Bishop Emeritus of the synod were adopted.

Calls were issued to: the Rev. Dale Sollom-Brotherton for non-congregational service as Principal of New Beginnings Consulting; the Rev. Edward O’Donnell as Supervisor in the Pastoral Care Department of California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco; the Rev. David Owren as Episcopal Vicar of St. Francis’ Episcopal Church in Fortuna; the Rev. Lyle Beckman as pastor of First United Lutheran Church in San Francisco, an independent Lutheran congregation; the Rev. Alice DeLaurier-O’Neil as pastor of Hope, the synodically authorized worshiping community in Tracy, CA; the Rev. Elli Kimbauer as Executive Director of the Monterey Bay Christian Counseling Ministry; and Ms. Eva Creydt Schulte for diaconal ministry at Congregations Organizing for Renewal in San Lorenzo, CA.

A number of appointments were made, including naming the Rev. William Wong chairperson of the synod’s Leadership Discipling Team, Ms. Pat Cash chairperson of the Assembly Planning Committee, and the Rev. Jack Davies chairperson of the Discipline Committee.

Council adopted a new Continuing Resolution: S11.01.A02 The synod treasurer shall be the chairperson of the Finance Committee.

Authorization was given for the 2003 Synod Assembly in Burlingame, CA on May 15, 16, & 17.

Council members recognized the Rev. Dan Senter for his faithful and well-organized service as chairperson of the Leadership Discipling Team with applause and the expression of thanks.

During a dinner celebration following the meeting, special thanks were expressed to those members whose terms on Council were ending: Pr. Kemp Segerhammar, Mr. Kent Madsen, Mr. Harry Marzolf, Pr. Renee Geiger, Mr. Bruce Lohse, Ms. Evelyn Thomas, and Bp. Robert Mattheis. (Pr. Geiger, Mr. Lohse, and Ms. Thomas were elected to new terms and will be continuing on Council.) Bishop Mattheis received special gifts, including gardening tools, seeds, and a hat to equip him for those tasks awaiting him at home.

Members of the Synod Staff, Pr. Noreen Meginness, Mr. Chuck Ruthroff, Pr. Samuel Hernandez, Pr. Brian Hughes, Pr. Harvey Blomberg, Pr. David Baker, and Pr. Paul Michaelson, the Rev. Jonathan Abernethy, Ms. Mary Brown, and Ms. Jean Fuller, were also recognized with great appreciation.
